Honoring Black History Month Through Community Engagement

February 24, 2025

Throughout February, LifeGift proudly celebrated Black History Month by engaging with the community through educational events and outreach initiatives. These efforts reinforced the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation while fostering meaningful connections with community members.

LifeGift had the privilege of hosting a Meet & Greet with former professional football player Michael Montgomery at its Houston office. Montgomery, a Texas A&M University graduate and former defensive end for the Green Bay Packers, also welcomed LifeGift to participate in the Heart of Michael’s Community Health Fair. At the event, Ambassadors of Hope Angela Hawkins, Elizabeth Soliz and Mary Varvel and LifeGift’s Necole Fielder and Dagmar Hohnstein provided valuable information about the donation process, helping to raise awareness about the life-saving impact of organ and tissue donation.

Additionally, LifeGift was invited to participate in Fluor Corporation’s Black History Month Non-Profit Showcase, organized by Fluor Cares and the Black Employee Alliance. Team members Breanna Garcia, Dagmar Hohnstein and Veronica Jones connected with Fluor employees, answering questions and providing key insights on donation and the registration process.

LifeGift’s outreach continued at Texas Southern University, where the team hosted an educational table at the university’s event on chronic kidney disease. Featuring keynote speaker Dr. Horatio E. Adrogue, a nephrologist and transplant specialist at Houston Methodist, the event highlighted the risk factors, prevention and management of kidney disease. LifeGift was honored to contribute to this important discussion, reinforcing its commitment to education and advocacy in the community.
